(Foucault) Bath house depicted by Persian miniature painter: Kamāl ud-Dīn Behzād (1495) Heterotopias are defined as sites which are embedded in aspects and stages of our lives and which somehow mirror and at the same time distort, unsettle or invert other spaces. Foucault summarises six principles of these ‘different’ spaces. Principle 3: Heterotopias arrange multiple spaces. This is arguably the most interesting dimension of Foucault's essay. Heterotopias are further connected with temporal discontinuities, and they begin ‘to function fully when [men] are in a kind of absolute break with their traditional time’ (Foucault, 1998, p. 182). Heterotopias can accumulate past times – as is the case with museums – extend certain

It is a constant feature of all human groups. It is evident, though, that heterotopias assume a wide variety of forms, to the extent that a single, absolutely universal form may not exist. In any case, it is possible to classify them into two main types. Foucault uses the term heterotopia to describe spaces that have more layers of meaning or relationships to other places than immediately meet the eye. In general, a heterotopia is a physical representation or approximation of a utopia, or a parallel space (such as a prison) that contains undesirable bodies to make a real utopian space possible. In a nutshell, heterotopias are worlds within worlds, mirroring and yet distinguishing themselves from what is outside.
